Hunting dog is a special dog that helps humans (hunters) while hunting. There are many varieties of hunting dogs and each one is employed for diverse tasks while hunting. Hound dogs are the most widely used dogs for hunting. There are different types of hounds such as sight hounds, scent hounds and Lurchers. Sight hounds are well known for its eye sight and speed. These dogs can perceive its prey from long distance; it stalks a prey quietly and then kills it. Sight hounds are well known for its silent nature and rapid fastness. These dogs don’t need much command and they work independently. Second is the scent hound that hunts by the smell (scent) and hence its name. These scent hound hunts regularly in packs and lead hunters to trail their prey. They make deep barking sounds when they spot a prey. Scent hounds are of great use for hunters to track preys which are hidden in bushes and invisible to human eyes. Next is the Lurcher which is a cross breed of sight hound and working breed, it is commonly called as pastoral dogs. These dogs are mostly used for working purposes along with hunting.


Hound dogs can trail animals like foxes, rabbit, pheasant, quail etc much easily. Selecting a right hunting dog based upon your hunting need is significant. An efficient hunting dog must have a good sense of smell and must be able to run fast enough as to catch its prey or reach its target. Hunt dogs must be well trained to perform any task in hunting. Training a hunting dog when it as young as puppy is much important. Hunting by smelling is much important, so it should be taught to sense any smell. Regular exercise and plenty of training are needed for hunt dogs.


Training of hunting dog should start as early as when it’s a puppy. Hunting dog must be well trained before taking for hunting. It should obey the commands of hunter and must be well disciplined. Hunting dog should be obedience and respond to commands at young stage. Training a hunting dog requires an electric collar to pass shock whenever it doesn’t respond to commands. It helps to get trained when it doesn’t respond, moreover while hunting when it gets diverted this collar helps to keep it in track. A sensible, well trained and disciplined hunting dog is a great friend of hunter.
